An inherited west London mansion mixes semi-diplomatic functions with accommodation for a foreign family. Careful restoration of the historic building is balanced internally with new inserted room-like elements which stand off the building shell like pieces of furniture. A new 350m2 underground building is formed beneath the landscaped garden; its other-worldliness is exploited architecturally, with major rooms/halls reading as buildings in an abstracted water landscape.
