The traditional Baghdadi house is the ‘base unit’ of the immensely rich urban fabric of the town of Kadhimiya. These extraordinary houses – almost unknown outside the region – are a radical challenge to inherited architectural norms for equivalent buildings in the West. This scheme draws on the morphology and poetics of the Baghdadi house in a major regeneration scheme for Kadhimiya which successfully integrates a complex matrix of religious, commercial, and housing demands. |
